Geography is the study of
interrelationship between man and his environment. Hecataeus in his book
of “ GESPERIODOS” first name this subject of Geography. Geography is
derived from two greek word Geo means earth and Graphia means the study. That
why, Hecataeus is known as the father of Geography. In the ancient period this
study was developed mainly by Greek and Roman Scholars like Aristrotol,
Herodotus, Strabo etc. In the medieval period this was slightly developed after
the contribution of Arabian Scholars.
But there was so much Dichotomies among
the geographer in respect of contents of this subject, like Physical vs Human
Geography, Systematic vs Regional Geography, Determinism vs Possibilism and so
far.
After these dichotomies , two German
scholar Humbolt and Carl Ritter contributed a new path in developing this
subject. Both of them believed the study of Geography should be scientific and
systematic instead of previous all contents in this subject.. And they remarked
the study of Geography in 19 th century as classical Geography.
Following the path of previous scholars,
modern Geography is much more scientific and problem solving in social aspect.
That’s why, it may be called as social science. After the quantative
approach and application of Remote Sensing and GIS this study now more
scientific and welfare for developing man and his surrounding environment.
